So Many People, So Many Parties

March 27, 2006 Kim Tracy Prince 6 Comments

Over the last two days, our family had three birthday parties to attend and one dinner with friends to throw. It all went very smoothly, because I gave up the idea of accomplishing anything besides the aforementioned. Now, Monday morning, I have piles of laundry and no food in the house. Guess what! It’s Suburban Mom Day! I will do laundry, go grocery shopping, watch Oprah, and entertain my child somehow…all in one day!

Notes on the weekend:
-The birthday parties gave me a serious creeping case of Keeping Up With the Kinsellas/Baldwins/Wrights. Kyle’s party is in 2 weeks and I was previously very nonchalant about it. I planned on it being a party for adults, and kids are invited. Since Kyle’s only 1, and doesn’t give a crap about plastic things in goody bags, I didn’t think it mattered. But over the weekend we had great fun and we came home with a teddy bear, a crazy straw cup, a backpack filled with fun things, a coloring book, a beach ball, and a package of organic snack crackers. The food at all the parties was good, too. I really don’t want to cave in to the pressure. I do have a fun little gift planned that I am going to make but that was the extent of my plans. Yep, I said it. I, who am not crafty, am going to make something crafty. Stay tuned for those results.
-Last night our friends came over for dinner and we were enjoying a pre-dinner glass of wine while watching Baby Einstein Orchestra. We turned off the sound and put on the radio and it was really weird to watch Baby Einstein puppets rocking out to the sounds of The Cure. Weird, yet appropriate.
-We went hiking again yesterday morning and that reminds me that $%^&-ing Marshall still hasn’t emailed me the pictures.

I remember little kid birthday parties. Oh…the preparation and the mess and the anguish.

The Einstein video/The Cure visual-auditory blitz sounds like primo birthday party entertainment!

Wow, talk about keeping up with the Joneses… what ever happened to having a few friends over for cake and punch? lol. Good luck with the craft project.

Here’s how my mom planned every single birthday party of mine:
Two days before my birthday, she made several phone calls to aunts, uncles, cousins, grandmas, etc:
“Hey, we’re having [sauce, pigs in the blanket, cheeseburgers, Pizza Works] and cake and ice cream for Katie’s birthday the day after tomorrow at 6:30pm. Can you make it?”
My guests’ “goody bags” consisted of a big healthy “thank you” for the gifts they’d buy me. Because after all, it’s MY birthday, not theirs.
