Altruism: the Feel-Good Instinct

July 8, 2006 Kim Tracy Prince 1 Comment

I remember reading once, somewhere, that humans are the only altruistic species. I don’t think that’s true, actually, but it’s nice to think that something good is natural in us, isn’t it?

I am cooking up something big for this family in Mobile, AL but they have immediate needs. If you want to help right away, send donations of goods or gift cards for Target or Wal-Mart to:

Miriam Wilson
505 Crawford Ln.
Mobile, Ala. 36617

Her girls are Shae, age 12, Alexis, age 8, and Mia, age 7. They need socks (ladies 9-10, girls 1-6 and girls 11-12), underwear (ladies 18 or XL, girls 8 or 10, and girls 7), and towels. EVERYONE has extra towels! I also have a strong feeling that Mom can use a pick-me-up. Some trashy magazines and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s usually does it for me, but you can use your imagination. Also they do now have a TV and DVD player so age-appropriate DVD’s that you want to unload would be appreciated too.

My larger project is to set up an arrangement with the store that sells school uniforms so that I can direct donations to cover the cost of uniforms so the girls can start school next month. Look for more info on that coming up. I am emailing all of this to those of you who have responded. Thank you!

Wow. You are inspiring. I’m going to Wal-Mart tomorrow….I’ll send along a gift certificate.
