The Transplant Blues

March 14, 2008 Kim Tracy Prince 6 Comments

It’s a new day. It’s gorgeous outside, it’s only 8:30, my kids are healthy and strong and playful.

But I’m sick. Still, or again, my head is filled with slime and I am exhausted after being awake for only an hour and a half. I have two little kids to care for by myself all day long. I have a long list of tasks to accomplish over and above just keeping the children safe and entertained.

Yet, I can barely keep my eyes open. How can a husband and father walk out on this mess as his wife crumples into a sobbing heap on the nearest kitchen chair, crying “If I lived near my family, someone could come over and take care of us!”

Then again, how could he not?

Keep your chin up! Things will get better. While my actual family is not close, we do have friends that we can call on in emergencies. In fact, when Sophie is going through the roll call of who is in her “family”, she always includes them in her list.
    Love, LisaD

Oh no, not again! What a total drag.
I wish I could jump in a car right now and come help you. Sadly, it has been all about work, work, work today and tomorrow and then one little day off and then more work. (I am taking a secret break, reading your blog.)
But you are family and I would be there in an instant if I could.
    Truly. Hang tough.

I’m sorry. Hope you feel better soon. I bet it sucked for your hubby also, having to leave for work when he’d rather have stayed home to help (or… maybe not so much…)

Sorry you are sick again. Have you gone to a doctor? This weekend schedule two very long naps and hand the reins over to Stew.

It does stink that we’re so far from family. It is hard. Really, really hard. Absolutely the hardest thing I’ve ever had to manage. Here’s my strategy for those days: You know that list of stuff you need to accomplish? Toss it out the door and concentrate on getting through the next half hour. Then, do that again. Lie on the couch, turn on the DVD player and cut yourself a break. It won’t kill those brilliant kids to get a bit more screen time than usual for a few days. Also, turn on the outside spigot, give them some buckets and just sit. Kids and water; as you know they are inseparable (for long periods of time). Hang in there. This too shall pass.
