Once upon a time I used to transcribe interviews, mostly when I was a freelance video producer making my own videos and I was too frugal to pay someone else to transcribe.
It can be tedious and painful, actually, so now on the rare occasion that I do a phone interview for print, I have hired transcribers to do the work. It is possible to have a machine do it for you, but they’re terrible. I mean it’s hard enough for a human to figure out what people are saying.
Or singing. This infographic shows you a comparison:
Thanks to Verbalink Transcription Services, who gave me this cool infographic and sponsored this post.

I majored in engineering, so for one of my classes we had to program a voice transcription device. I have nightmares about that project to this day. I just remember sitting in an empty lab screaming, “Three! THREE! Not free, THREE!!” at the computer. *Shudder*
I’m glad to learn that the human transcription was superior but SERIOUSLY?
She’d never heard “Tiny Dancer”?
How is that possible?
