Oh, the shorts in a bunch. My Facebook and Twitter feed is all up in a tizzy because Martha Stewart said “Who are these bloggers? They are not trained editors at Vogue Magazine…[blah blah] bloggers are not experts.”
First of all, I would like to hear the whole question before I know what the heck she was talking about.
Secondly, SHE IS RIGHT. Relax, though, my esteemed colleagues. She’s not talking about you.
There are 8.5 jigawatt-gazillion blogs. They can’t all be experts.
Yes, there are plenty of true experts blogging about their fields. I don’t really consider myself an expert on anything besides my own opinion. When I throw a recipe up here on the blog, I’m not suggesting to you that I am an expert chef or baker. When I write about makeup, I am not saying I’m a beauty expert. These are my opinions, my experiences, and I’m sharing them with my readers.
And that’s what SO MANY BLOGS are. Maybe yours IS an expert site about food. Maybe it’s about fashion. Maybe you ARE an expert. I’m pretty sure Martha wasn’t talking about you. You have to admit, there ARE those bloggers who slap up a popsicle stick and Elmer’s glue cross and call it “crafty,” or don a hipster beanie and a chunky necklace and call it “style.” While their opinions are relative, a blogger.com account and a cute dress don’t make you an expert.
Besides, just like we teach our kids, if the insult is untrue, then it shouldn’t really hurt, should it? Just yesterday someone called me a skanky old bitch in a comment here, and I laughed. Because dude, I’m not THAT old. I watched that clip and didn’t think Stewart was including me in her version of “bloggers” at all.
So relax. And as with every other non-story that not much of the rest of the world cares about, maybe if we stop talking about this, it will all go away.

I see your point. Martha was generalizing and I didn’t get offended because I thought she was insulting ME. I don’t claim to be an expert on anything so there’s that. But sometimes, you just gotta call a spade a spade. Or a jerk a jerk.

I totally agree
Thank you!! That is exactly how I took her comment too Kim! π She also said in a very smug tone that Rachel Ray can’t bake – shocker! Rachel admitted that herself MANY times. I think she has a very smug tone about her…..this has translated to a very successful business because her taste is impeccable. (Seriously beyond any standard I could dream up for myself)
That is why, according to her standards, not many bloggers add up. Why is this so shocking to everyone? LOL!
She’s never been known for her humbleness or relatability……

Yes! I agree…and I felt like that was such an out of place comment. I would love to see how that piece was edited, as it really did seem like it was part of an entirely different conversation. I have been bothered a bit that Martha’s comments didn’t really bother me at all, and I think it’s because I am pretty sure (hopeful?) that she didn’t mean what we all heard. And I certainly know she wasn’t directing it at me. Mostly because I clearly call myself out as a non-expert anytime I bake or bring out the glue gun.
And I do have to agree with her, there is a whole-lotta (yup, that’s a word. Made it up myself. On my blog, lol) un-expert crazy going on out there in blog land π BUT, that’s also what kind of makes it special.
Great post, thank you!!

Who takes that old jailbird seriously. Too bad she didn’t mention a blog, would have been good for traffic.

Now I wish my comment section had a like button for each comment. Because I like all of you and what you said.

I totally agree. I too am an expert on my own opinion. And honestly, I’ve been in hell this week trying to figure out how to FEED KIDS who live in poverty at my sons’ school while North Carolina and the country go to hell in a handbasket. What Martha says is the least of my concerns. I’m sure she could weave the damn handbasket herself out of the dried brush in her fields, but what I’d really like is for her to help me find a way to feed these children.

Yeah, I just blog because it can be fun. Not always, but can be. I’m really not that concerned about what Martha says about me. I’m actually pretty confident that she has no idea who I am. I wish my computer had a filter where I could filter out things I do not want to read about. Like Martha Stewart, Congress, why Diet Coke is bad for you…

I was initially quite shocked at what she said, considering the fact that I thought she LOVED bloggers based on her appearance at BlogHer etc.
BUT, you are right. We shouldn’t be too bothered by it, unless we felt personally insulted. We know what we are good at. And even we aren’t, we can still blog it. No one can tell us what to do with our own space.
