Sh*t I Say: “Hello, Love”

April 9, 2012 Kim Tracy Prince 3 Comments

Today is the ninth day of the April A to Z Challenge.  During this month I will be writing blog posts every day (with breaks on Sundays) about the topic “Sh*t I Say” starting with each consecutive letter of the alphabet.  This is one crazy project, y’all.

Hello, Love

This is a picture of my grandmother, Betty Sullo, as a high school cheerleader.

My Gramma died in 1992 – before the advent of digital photography – so I don’t have another photo of her later in life within easy reach. She was very short. Once I was about 14 I towered over her. She used to say I could eat peanuts off her head. I use that line now when I meet very short people. Only if they have a sense of humor, of course.

I have a vivid memory of Gramma kneeling down to receive me and my siblings when we would visit with her (before we grew so tall that we had to kneel down to hug her). She would hunker down, open her arms wide, and shout “Hello, love!” as we ran in for hugs and kisses. I can still hear her scratchy, musical voice. It brings tears to my eyes. I really miss her almost 20 years later.

Loss sucks.

I often say “Hello, love!” when I answer the phone and know that the person on the other end is one of my beloved friends. I don’t think I say it to my children since they are pretty much always with me. I may say it to other children. Anyway, the point is, you should always welcome love into your life. You never know when it is going to be snatched away from you.

Your grandma sounds like quite the character. (Also, makes me think of The Beatles.)

Loss does suck. I had an awesome Grandma too, and I miss her every day.

Swinging through from the A to Z page. Good luck on the rest of the challenge!
