A couple of months ago we decided that we would consider moving within Los Angeles to get into a better school neighborhood. I won’t go into detail about why, but you can imagine. We have some pretty bright kids and we want to provide them with the best educational opportunities we can afford blah blah blah. A friend of mine is a mortgage broker, and I happened to say the word “move” to her, and it was as if I rubbed a lamp and a genie appeared, because the next thing I knew, gravel-voiced Myrna was standing in our living room with dollar signs in her eyes and an almost-audible “cha-CHING!” sound coming out of her head.
With an adamant warning that we wanted to proceed slowly, I told Myrna and Liz, the mortgage broker, that yes, they could go ahead setting up inquiries and doing research about our mortgage-worthiness and our property value. I knew it was an overwhelming task, but I figured I have time to do the research and really get a grasp of the project and break it down into manageable steps. But again, before I knew it Liz had worked up a pre-approval letter and I found myself leaving this message on her voice mail:
“Liz? It’s Kim. Forgive this stupid question but what is a pre-approval letter, exactly, and what do I do with it? Kthxbai.”
When I hung up, I sat there for a moment, thinking about how familiar the language of real estate had seemed to me until then. Now that I was actually faced with the real job of selling and buying a home, suddenly these terms were applicable to me, and not just the people I read about in the paper, or the stock market, or the economy at large.
And I also realized that my self-directed education in home shopping would make a great blog.
With my glimmer of an idea I headed back to my office and what do you think was waiting in my email in-box? A message from the blog editor at Roost, a real estate search site. He was interested in getting non-real-estate-pros on board to blog there.
And thus, Diary of a Moving Mom was born. Please click on over and check it out. It’s the same kind of crap I blog about here, but focused on our home selling and shopping journey, and sometimes it will even be serious and I will even interview people. It’s going to be like a soap opera, a reality show, a sitcom, and an HGTV home makeover show all wrapped up in a blog.

Cool–I feel the same way. I think I “get it”, then talk to someone in real estate and realize I really don’t know it all, not even close. I look forward to learning over your shoulder, even if I don’t plan to move anytime soon. Good luck on the quest!
I know sometimes I am blind..but I don’t see your post on Roost???!!!
uuuuummmmmmmmmm…what happened to moving to CT?
Right on Auntie Rola!!!!!!!
The way things work out sometimes leaves me with my jaw wide open. When I reached out to you about doing something with Roost, I had no idea you were thinking about moving. And then to hear that you had never bought or sold a house and would be going through it for the first time…a match made in heaven. We are so stoked to have you on board and know your section will give great insight to the process from a “real person” perspective. Check out your first post: http://blog.roost.com/2009/09/14/introducing-diary-moving-mom-kim-tracy/
