It Helps To Write It Down

March 22, 2006 Kim Tracy Prince 2 Comments

Oh man, I love music. I get caught up in all the crap I “have” to do all the time and I actually forget to put on music that I love. In the car, where I used to totally rock out, I play “Toddler Favorites” and sing along to amuse Kyle so he’ll have fun on the ride. I find myself humming the theme song to “Oobi” as I clean the kitchen. I never crank the stereo anymore while dancing around with a glass of Southern Comfort in my hand.

Yeah. That’s what I used to do.

So I got this video iPod recently. I won it by being the 2000th caller in the local NPR station’s subscription drive. I wouldn’t have subscribed this time because I hate spending the extra money, but they were hawking an audio documentary about Johnny Cash that Stewart wanted, so I called in. A few days later, hey guess what, you win!

That was 2 months ago! I finally got around to fooling with it and trying to hook it up. I’m learning about podcasts and video formats and all kinds of technical stuff. I used to pick this stuff up pretty quickly but now my brain, as you know, is melting.

I remembered a song I heard on the local rock station recently – I only remembered the name of the band, not the song title or even any of the lyrics or how the song went, but I remembered that I like it when I heard it. So I did some searching on iTunes and I found it! It brought tears to my eyes and it’s so great…it fills me with longing for music in general. You can listen to it too.

Nada Surf
“Always Love”
(Click on the song player in the top right-hand corner until you see this song title)

ALWAYS LOVE
to make a mountain of
your life is just a choice
but i never learned enough
to listen to the voice that told me

always love
hate will get you every time
always love
don’t wait ‘til the finish line

slow demands come around
squeeze the air and keep the rest out
it helps to write it down
even when you then cross it out

but always love
hate will get you every time
always love
even when you want to fight

self-directed lives
i want to know what it’d be like to
aim so high above
every card that you get dealt you

always love
hate will get you every time
always love
hate will get you
and i’ve been held back by something
you said to me quietly on the stairs
you said hey you good ones

WOW! You won an KCRW thing?! That’s AWESOME! Congrats!
I have maintained the stance that video iPods are crossing the line… who wants a little 2×2 video? But then I saw the video iPod in the apple store immediately started thinking that I must have one.

Congrats on the video iPod. Since we live parallel lives, I thought you should know that we contribute to NPR, too, (but not all the time because there are too many pledge drives and we have to eat). I also wanted you to know that we listen to Toddler Favorites on a daily basis.
Loved the song; it gave me chills. I can’t tell you how damn good it would feel to be slightly tipsy from too much champagne (my drink of choice – I know, it’s weird), cranking this song and dancing.
