Kyle Reaches Out To Touch Someone

January 17, 2006 Kim Tracy Prince 6 Comments

Today was one of THOSE days. Kyle and I went to work, and it turns out, Kyle doesn’t want to just sit around and play with his colorful plastic toys while I Get Stuff Done. No, he wants to crawl. Really fast. In the direction of anything dangerous, breakable, or off limits. If he doesn’t get to do this, or if I don’t play with him, he whines. Oh, the drone of a whining 9-month-old.

To be fair, he is only 9 months old. How can I expect him to sit still while I work? I knew this day would come sooner or later, but it sure does seem like its sooner, not later. (Right now he is crawling around my home office, flinging his half-finished bedtime bottle around the way our cat flings crickets.)

One of the only things that truly distracts Kyle for a few minutes in a row is my cell phone. Can I hear it, internet moms? “ME TOO!” you’re all saying. No fake plastic chirpy TOY phone for this kid. Nope, it has to be the real thing, that beeps when you punch the buttons with your meaty little fingers and has germs all over it for when you smother it with your drool. I should have held on to my old cell phone for my future children to play with. What was I thinking when I donated it to a third world country?

He was happily playing with the phone when I heard a woman’s voice coming out of it: “Hello? Hello?” Kyle actually called someone! So I took the phone, braved the superwhine that followed, and said “Kyle called you” to the speaker. And guess what – it was Gramma! Kyle called his Gramma!

And with that, her day was made. Mine too.*

*I would love it if the day was rosy and sweet after that but there were many more hours of whining and then when we finally got home and I rushed to get dinner on the table at 7:30 like I agreed to when Stewart called me to see when I’d be home and have dinner on the table (he didn’t say that but that’s what he meant) I waited until 8:05 to give up on him and storm into the south wing, close the door, and act pissed for the rest of the night. Now Kyle is playing with an electrical cord. Gotta go.

re the dinner thing: YOU MUST GIVE HIM AN EXACT TIME. And if he doesn’t show up, eat without him…..
