God Bless Maui

June 8, 2011 Kim Tracy Prince 2 Comments

So I just learned that Maui is the only one of the Hawaiian islands named after an ancient deity. Apparently the original human settlers, up from Tahiti, felt that it was the most beautiful and so deserving of a divine name.

As I type this, the screeching and hooting and hollering from the luau are echoing across the Ocean Lawn outside the Sheraton Ka’anapali. We have an incredible ocean view room which allowed my sleepy boy to watch the fire spinner from our balcony since he was literally falling asleep on my lap during the show. We’ve been up since 5:45 AM Pacific Time and we are suburban. We simply cannot roll like that.

Me, I’m a mess. My back is killing me and I resorted to getting recommendations for a local chiropractor from the hotel bar staff. Hey, man, those are the guys who sympathize, right? Plus, once whiff of “my back hurts” and they pour you a stronger drink.

That explains this post, right?

Maui is an awesome god — he snared the sun so people could have days full of light. He went up to Haleakala (“house of the sun”) and snared the sun up there. WOoh! Maui is cool.
