Sh*t I Say: “Don’t”

April 4, 2012 Kim Tracy Prince 4 Comments

Today is the fourth day of the April A to Z Challenge.  During this month I will be writing blog posts every day (with breaks on all Sundays except this one) about the topic “Sh*t I Say” starting with each consecutive letter of the alphabet.  This is one crazy project, y’all.

Don’t

I’m a lover, not a fighter. Okay, sometimes I’m a fighter. But mostly I’m a lover. I love really hard. It hurts a lot when someone betrays me or doesn’t love me right back. And when I get sad or scared I want my lovelies next to me holding my hand or rubbing my back or just telling me that everything is going to be okay.

The above is a truth that emerged when I stepped back from the list I made of the ways I have used the word “Don’t.” Behold:

Don’t:

talk to your father like that
talk to me like that
stay in the house overnight if you feel threatened
mess with me
run around the pool
leave me
pick your nose
put your fingers in your mouth
lick your brother
put your hands down your pants
lie to me
patronize me
be mean
run away
pee on the floor
have another drink of water right now or you will pee in your bed
make any noise
touch that

It is also quite evident that I am disgusted by the things that little boys touch with those hands. Blech.

Not to keep things all maudlin around here, but I have to add one more. My grandfather died on Sunday. After Lisa died (a phrase I should add to my list of “Sh*t I Say”) people asked me what they could do for me because I was so close to her and so affected. I told them “Please don’t die.” Clearly my grandfather did not get the message. But I’ll cut him some slack – he was 93 and leaves a legacy of wonderfully flawed descendants behind. I call them my family.

He was a bartender on the train to New York City. He looks like a character in a murder mystery.
I loved him so much.

This is totally off topic, but my best friend starting posting pictures of herself smiling with her mouth open. She told me “that was her new thing” because it made her look “happier”. Every smiling picture of you is with your mouth open. 😀

I am so sorry for your loss Kim. And, yeah, things like “Don’t pee on the floor” … who knew in our pre-mom days we would one day need to say such things?!

I Kimmy. I have a Don’t Die rule too. My grandmother was the only one I gave permission to. I had the benefit of seeing her 10 days before she died so that I knew she was better off letting go. She held on longer than she should have. One morning I stood in the shower and sobbed and prayed her to heaven…only to learn she had let go a little bit before then.

I wish I could stay next to you and rub your back and sing hymns to praise your grandfather. I might even play with your hair and pass you a tissue and chat with your boys about cool things.

I wish I could come and take Kyle on a special day for his birthday and hug him and love him and do all of the things that Lisa would do for him this week.

    Know I love you.

Suz, I just re-read this comment. I don’t think I really gave it enough attention the other day because I was traveling. It’s making me cry, a week later. Thanks, and I love you too!
