The other night, after the Superbowl, my dealer showed up at my house. It was nighttime, bedtime actually, and the husband was snuggled in bed with Kid 1, Kid 2 was already asleep, my visiting dad was hanging out watching (more) TV, and I was snuggled up here with my laptop.
The knock came. I was expecting her, but nobody else was. I jumped up and ran to the door faster than I ever sprinted to the doorway during an earthquake. There she was, with my stuff.
A glorious pile of books.
One was a return of a book she borrowed (David Sedaris’ “When You Are Engulfed in Flames.”) One was a book she describes as “an old friend,” Ken Follett’s “World Without End.” And the third – thick and inviting, was “Breaking Dawn,” the fourth and latest full volume of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series.
Ah, bliss.
Before you snark at me for writing about Twilight again, let me just say this: at our last book club meeting, we actually talked about the book for longer than any other previous meeting. The conversation kept coming back to it despite our attempts to go off on tangents the way we usually do. We played the movie soundtrack as our dinner music. We – a collection of 30-something-plus women – opined and argued and waxed poetic about this series of teenage vampire in love stories.
And I would like to say here, for the record, that Ms. Meyer single-handedly revived my love of reading and music in one fell swoop. The last few months have been so busy for me that my only escape from reality has been collapsing into exhausted, tenuous, often-interrupted sleep. But now that I am newly obsessed with books and music, I am able to be transported into different worlds as I snuggle in my bed before sleep, or driving in my car back and forth to work or the forty times I drove down to Hollywood and Highland last Friday. (That’s another story, involved Elmo and a lost earring.)
I’m listening to the following music in the car:
Twilight soundtrack (duh)
Vicki Randle’s Sleep City – she sang at our wedding and her album is f*&cking great.
Patty Griffin’s Living With Ghosts (inspired by this post)
Iron & Wine / Calexico’s In the Reins
A couple of Sade songs
Sarah McLachlan’s Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
The Jimmies‘ Make Your Own Someday (because sometimes there are kids in the car)
And to see what I’m reading or can’t wait to read, you can check out this awesome website which is like Facebook for readers, except random people you knew in elementary school don’t “friend request” you.

Hey, I only deal in licit substances. Don’t give people the wrong idea. Happy Reading
Kim,
World Without End was pretty good I suggest you read Pillars of the Earth by Follett first. Allthough you can read WWE alone it will make more sense to read Pillars first. I also agree they were like old friends.
Harriet the Spy?
Favorite book of all time
I sent you something in the mail today!!
My 14-year old niece and my 30+ year old boss have both been reading those vampire books…
Do I spy a Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genuis over there? That’s a great book.
I see some I’ve read, and some I’ve thought about reading, but after seeing your ratings I’m not convinced I want to (A Heartbreaking Work….).
