“Avatar” Puts Money Where the Trees Are

Avatar DVD

Quickly, here are my thoughts about “Avatar:”

1.  A blogger promo seems a bit silly, since nobody is unaware of “Avatar” by now.  But if you are reading this and you haven’t seen it yet, I liked it.  Very much.

2.  However, I haven’t actually seen the DVD because of the elaborate ruse to keep Brady from seeing it.  Kyle was dying to see it, but I was concerned that it was too violent and scary in parts for him (after all, it’s basically “The Mission” with aliens and scientists in place of natives and Jesuits, or “Dances Wolves” with aliens and scientists instead of Native Americans and soldiers) and I knew it wasn’t appropriate at all for Brady, so we waited until Brady was falling asleep (in bed next to Kyle – they sleep together every night) and then tried to get Kyle out of the room under the guise that he was misbehaving and needed to sleep alone, but he is not good at faking or lying, which I guess is a good thing, so our cover was blown.  Brady woke up fully and wailed and wailed that he wanted to come, too.  So I crawled into bed with him and we wound up having a nice little snuggly chat.  “‘Member?  My mommy?  Went on the rollacoasta the dragon?  Fast!”  He reminisced about our recent trip to Legoland and recounted in great 3-year-old detail the day’s spectacular injury:  “I crash my bike my Kyle and booboo bandaid.  See?!” and he showed me the scrape on his little elbow. Needless to say, by the time he fell asleep, I was asleep too, and so I missed the opportunity to watch Kyle’s reaction as he saw the “Avatar” DVD.  I also planned to use the remote to skip the scary parts.  Stewart took over the job, and said that Kyle loved the movie!  Stewart himself considered it a left-wing commentary about the Bush administration and the invasion of Iraq, and I cut him off there, unwilling to get into that discussion again.

3.  As a DVD producer myself, I’m not a fan of the release of such a huge movie without bonus features.  I mean, really.  Yes, they give you a special code with every purpose for you to enter another world online, and blah blah, but to me if I have already seen a movie, I don’t need to see it over and over again, the only reason I’d buy the DVD is for the bonus  features.

4.  Best thing about “Avatar?”  The Million Trees project.  While it seems slightly ridiculous that you can adopt a virtual tree that represents a real tree, at least there is a real tree being planted somewhere.  Behold:
