Last night my boss treated me to another live taping of American Idol. This week it is the final three, and as I type this the results show is on. I’m not watching it. I don’t like to watch it live on TV because of the commercials. In person, the commercial breaks are the best part.
I wrote a still-accurate description of what it’s like to be an audience member at the Idol stage at CBS two years ago. The relevant updates are as follows:
-Celebs in the audience included Melissa Etheridge, who looked super nervous for Crystal during “Come To My Window,” which L. and I both found adorable. Also Andrew Lloyd Weber, Colin Hanks, Bradley Whitford, Portia de Rossi.
-Simon came up during one of the breaks and stood right near me while he talked to some people. He was really very nice to them. It made me like him more.
-Ellen got the most applause of all the judges. The place went nuts.
-Crystal’s baby daddy and baby were hanging around outside afterwards waiting for her. The baby is about a year plus now, and super super cute.
-Guess who’s totally hot in person? Kara DioGuardi. You didn’t get to see the sparkly skirt on her smokin’ hot dress. Girl carried it well, too.
-I ran into someone I know in the audience, who ran into someone else I know later on last night. It always surprises me that LA is such a small town.
-We had to check our phones in again, which bothered me a lot more because this time I have an iPhone and I wanted to Twitpic and tweet almost everything. This was the best I could do.
-Producer Katie Fennelly is as cute as a button and must be thanked for kicking down the tix.
-I wasn’t as into any of the remaining artists, and Lee’s big “moment” felt completely engineered, but that didn’t make it less fun.
Some of my pals online are getting to attend the finale, which is awesome for them. For myself, I will gladly be home. The finale takes place at the Nokia Live theater downtown on a Wednesday night. No thank you! I’ll look for my peeps in the audience!

FYI, I gave Hanks’ new show a shot. For me it was awful, but 12 year-old boys would probably love it.
