I’m not a purse person. I keep the same old purses for years. I don’t spend a lot on them, I beat them to hell, and I barely coordinate them with my outfits. While I admire a nice soft leather Coach clutch or creamy hobo bag, I see them as mostly utilitarian, a place to keep things when I go out. My favorite ones and therefore the ones that fall apart the fastest are my backpack/purse combos – perfect for when I’m out with the kids and need all of my hands free.
It was weird, then, that I pulled a new purse out of my closet today of all days. Back at BlogHer ’10 I won this kicky vegan faux-leather bag at a dinner for the Tavern on the Green charity that sells flavored olive oils to benefit the database of missing and exploited children. Long story short, there was a drawing, and I was the big winner. From the pile of purses I chose…the one with the puffer fish.
I took the kids to the dentist this afternoon. I used the bag because it is bigger than my regular handbag and I needed room for stuff to keep us occupied in the waiting room. That was all for nothing, because there is a giant cylindrical aquarium in the middle of said waiting room…and there is a puffer fish inside! Oh, my son couldn’t get enough. Even a woman who was there with her own kid cried “It’s the same fish that is on your bag!”
I’ll tell you what. I’ve never received more compliments on a handbag.
