There are a lot of “Baby’s First…” things, and one of the most popular, it seems, is Baby’s First Christmas. So far it hasn’t really seemed like Christmas, because with my grandfather in the hospital, my mother hasn’t hauled out the decorations or worked on her quilts or played Christmas music very much. A few days ago she caught Kyle’s cold, so she’s really slowed down. My mother, of course, is the Grand Dame of holiday spirit and the source of my love of Christmas and my nostalgia for snow and my hometown during the holidays. So until she really gets into it, it’s not quite the Season.
But yesterday I had a chance to go out shopping (shopping! by myself!) and I found myself enthralled by all of the Baby’s First Christmas things out there. Sucker that I am, I got a Hallmark ornament with a place for Kyle’s photo. I can’t wait to put it on the tree that is not yet in my parents’ house. We’re going to the tree farm this weekend to kill one and drag it back here. That last bit of savagery is specifically for my husband, who hates the killing of trees for holiday consumerism. I, on the other hand, love every bit of it, down to the last days of seeing castoff trees on the curb ready for pickup 2 months after Christmas.
Kyle’s cold, and probably the travel, has made him a little bit extra pathetic at night. He wakes up twice a night and so far I have been nursing him both times, and snuggling down in bed with him. Well last night I decided that was enough of that, because I’m not getting any sleep and he’s been off his schedule. His grandparents and I have been enjoying having him fall asleep in our laps as we watch TV, and we didn’t put him down until about 10pm. Since he barely ate any dinner, I gave him a bottle when he woke at 11:30. So when he woke again 4:00 I refused to feed him. It took 25 minutes for us to get back to sleep, after the screaming screaming screaming. I’m surprised my mother didn’t run down the stairs to stop me from torturing him. Then he slept for about 10 minutes, woke up, and continued fussing. So I finally nursed him, then put him down, confident that he would sleep until at least 7:30. No dice. He woke at 7, ready to eat and play. I was so tired I had my sick mother take him for the next 2 hours while I slept in. I have even been reading Babycenter tips on how to get your child to sleep through the night! Since I’ll be here for 3 more weeks, there’s not much holding me back from working on Kyle’s schedule. Let this be a grand experiment.
So cute in his snow suit. Ahh my nephew is home for the holidays and he experienced snow for the first time yesterday. He is a CA baby now a VA beach baby, so Snow is new to him!

I’m reading “The No-cry Sleep Solution” by Elizabeth Pantley at the present moment. I tried the “cry it out” way and kiddo about threw up – I’m not doing that again. Right now he still gets up, but he’s sick, too (but sleeps until 9 am!).
BTW, I just noticed I’m on your “blogs I read” list. Honored.

Yes, I’m up pretty late reading your blog – because I’m your number 1 fan! ๐ I had to catch up on the goings on in your life and the rest of your family. : ) Kyle is in his own groove now especially as he’s out of his element – room,. crib, etc. Anyhow, hope everyone is recuperating so that atleast you all can enjoy the eve and day of Christmas. You go to tree farms????? What a concept – I guess we’re spoiled in SoCal as th tree farmers come to us.
