Crazy as Peeing in a Cup

April 21, 2008 Kim Tracy Prince 5 Comments

Today we had a big doctor’s visit: the one year checkup for Brady and three year checkup for Kyle.
Brady
Weight: 23 lbs. 10 oz.
Height: 30 1/4″

Kyle
Weight: 40 lbs. 6 oz.
Height: 40 1/4″

Kyle’s stats make him ready to move from a car seat to a booster. A while back we bought him a large convertible toddler seat that has a 5-point harness and can be used with a seatbelt. I’m not emotionally ready to put him in a seat that Kindergarteners use.

We were faced with another, unexpected milestone. When we got to the doctor’s office, we immediately grabbed the men’s room key from the front desk and sent Stewart and Kyle to “pee on the toilet!” The nurse came out to the waiting room while the boys were taking care of business and said “Oh no! If he’s potty trained he’s supposed to pee in this cup!”

I was dumbfounded. Nowhere in the parenting manuals do they tell you that there comes a time when your child transitions to things like peeing in a cup and getting their blood pressure checked. Okay maybe not the parenting manuals I’ve read, which is none. So maybe I should have been forewarned, but I was shocked.

Kyle was delighted, however. Once he was informed that he had to actually pee in a cup, he held this cup and walked around the doctor’s office telling everyone that he had to “pee! In a cup! That’s crazy!”

I was doubtful that he’d be up to the task but when the time came, the kid delivered. I have to give some credit to Stewart, who oversaw the process while Brady was being examined.

All is well with both children. Kyle got a Hep A shot and barely whimpered. Brady was spared his shots for now because he has a runny nose and a late-night cough, but he has MMR coming up. Before we left, the doctor, who is younger than me and has three children as well as this thriving pediatric practice, gave me a hug and said “You’re doing a good job.”

Contrats on the clean bills of health!
Theo had his 4 year visit last week and was asked for the first time to pee in a cup. He stared at the cup then whispered to me, bewildered, “Mommy, don’t they have a potty?”
We switched Theo to a bigger seat on his birthday — he and Kyle are the same weight! I researched he hell out of it, reluctant to ever part with the proven safety of a 5 pt. harness and finally found one from a company called Britax.

Hey, we just did this too! My kids are two years and 5 days apart. Three years for Oliver and one year for Eleanor. Oliver is smaller than Kyle and Eleanor is bigger than Brady. There was no peeing though. The bloodpressure cuff freaked everyone out sufficiently.
We got the carseats that go up to 60 pounds. Maybe by then I’ll be ready to put Oliver in a booster!

We also switched our girl to the booster seat with the back a couple of months ago. She had her 4-year check up yesterday and is the exact same height as Kyle but only 33 pounds (skinny girl!) – I know, emotionally you are not ready to admit they can be this big! How much do you love your doctor, to give you a hug and say that to you 🙂

Wow. That is one solid kid. Luke is the same height but only 31 pounds.
We have a booster with a back for Luke that we use to put in and out of Alec’s truck. I guess technically he’s not heavy enough for it, but he doesn’t try to get out. He’s using it in my car right now, too, because the cat peed on the other one somehow and now the whole car stinks because of it. Stupid cat.

I want to go to your doctor! Ours is always condescending and telling us well-educated parents that we don’t know what we’re talking about.
Peeing in a cup? I can’t even get my kids to pee in a toilet!
