You may recall my tween obsession with American Idol. It hasn’t gone away even though, as Stewart says when each season begins “This will probably be the last year of this show, huh?” I’m not crazy about the new format with the 12 performers for each of the last few weeks, but whatever. We are lemmings, and we follow.
I’m writing about it now because I was so blown away by one performance last night. Ju’not Joyner sang a song I had never heard before and it touched my heart. I admit it – I cried. I know you did too out there so stop laughing.
Thanks to YouTube and some scurvy pirate, I share it with you here (song starts at 0:55):
The song is “Hey There, Delilah” by the Plain White T’s, and boy are they makers of plain white boy music. Not that there’s anything wrong with that – I just hadn’t heard it before, and I’m pleased to have once again discovered something new to me through this show. Joyner took a swingy little song and made it smooooth and sent out such a feeling of longing that I thought I could touch it. If I was an early-in-the-season voter, I would have voted for him.
I loved his rendition, too. I’ve heard Delilah about a million times but he still made it sound new. I’d have voted for him if I were American, and 14. 🙂
I won’t watch Idol until they get to the finalists, although I am curious about the new judge.
I like this song- it is one of two by the Plain White Ts I have (Lazy Day Afternoon being the other, if you are curious) I’ll have to listen to this version of it.
I can’t believe you’ve never heard that song. ??
I don’t listen to radio that plays stuff like this. NPR, news radio, or CD’s/iPod only.
FAB rendition of the song … better than the original and the Plain White T’s version.
Amazing.
Delilah is Jackson’s favorite song…
I love this version (thanks for sharing it), and I love this post. Also “scurvy pirate” made me smile.
