Sh*t I Say: “My Bad”
Today is the thirteenth day of the April A to Z Challenge. During this month I will be writing blog posts every day (with breaks on Sundays) about the topic “Sh*t I Say” starting with each consecutive letter of the alphabet. This is one crazy project, y’all.
My bad.
Actually today is technically the rest day of the April A-to-Z Challenge, and I screwed up by not posting this yesterday. How appropriate, then, that the Sh*t I Say of the day is my version of a lame apology. “My bad” is what I say when I know I messed something up, got it wrong, or let someone down, if the transgression was slight and not the end of the world. It’s my way of taking ownership of mistakes without dwelling on it or making it worse.
When I screwed up really badly I will in fact apologize and I feel lots of guilt. Be sure of that. There’s always guilt. But “My bad” makes the guilt a little lighter.
Years ago there was a show called Ally MacBeal and in the lawyer’s office there was an obnoxious partner who would say really obnoxious things, realize they were obnoxious, and then say “Bygones.” I liked that. But since he was a fictitious character, a caricature, even, of an annoying lawyer, “Bygones” never really worked for me.
So here is how I have screwed up so far today:
-Thought Kyle’s basketball game was at 11 AM. It’s at 1PM.
-Scheduled him for a playdate at noon. Had to cancel.
-Failed to let all the parents know that Kyle and Brady’s Chuck E. Cheese party this afternoon is very small, so someone leaked it and now more kids are coming. Awesome.
-Messed up a thingy in the back end of the blog I work for, so a post went up 2 days late.
-Forgot to get stuff for goodie bags for the birthday party.
There’s probably more. For some reason, today I can’t do anything right. But you know what? It’ll all be okay.
My bad.
