What, Me Wii?

Bad Ass Dad tries out the new Wii Fit Plus system

I haven’t really been into video games since back in the 80’s, when my parents, a.k.a. “Santa,” got an Atari 2600 for me and my brother for Christmas. Oh, the fun we had playing Pitfall and River Raid! My mom wanted to try it out, but we barely ever let her.

Fast forward to my adulthood, when I can do anything I want. Sure, I could have gotten back into video games, but who has time? (One might say, who has time to blog? Touché, I say to that one. Touché.) Even as video game technology has advanced to include incredibly realistic graphics and much more bloodshed and, to its credit, zombies, I have remained uninterested, untouched, nonplussed, etc.

That is, until I saw my family playing games on the Wii™ system by Nintendo.

Eight adults, three children. All were going nuts. The youngest child was given a remote that didn’t work, and he played along with gusto, not knowing that he wasn’t really playing. We all shrieked and hollered, and I was captured on film:

wii with gusto

I hadn’t had that much fun with electronics since that time at the arcade in 1987 when I got to the sixth Q-Bert screen. Oh yeah, if you know what I’m talking about, then you’re as old as I am.

When I was invited to host a Wii Fit™ Plus party for Nintendo at the end of October, I accepted gladly. Not only would I get to play with the Wii again, but I would also get a preview of the new and improved Wii Fit Plus game that somehow allows one to work out using the system. At home. For an easy few minutes a day, if that’s all one can spare. Even as a family activity. On top of all that, I got to invite a bunch of my friends to play, too.

We were told to dress for yoga, and that we would indeed be put through a workout. As a fan of yoga myself (despite the shortcomings of the gym classes I attend) I was intrigued.

Once we assembled, we sat through a demo of the Wii Fit Plus game. You can enter all of your personal stats, including height and weight, and the system will track the numbers for you on a daily basis if you wish. It measures your weight when you stand on the Wii Balance Board™ that is remotely hooked up to the Wii system. It even measures your center of gravity, which it uses as the goal for many of the exercises. Personal trainer Natalie demonstrated many of the functions of Wii Fit Plus and did a little workout while we watched.

Then it was time for us to try. We paired up to go through the pre-designed yoga workout by taking turns. I have to say I was skeptical. How would an electronic system be able to tell if I was doing the poses correctly? It’s all about the center of gravity as measured by the pad. Even in warrior 2, you keep one foot on the pad, which is a bit awkward at first, but I soon forgot about that because I was so focused on keeping the red dot in the yellow zone. It was NOT easy.

Once finished with the workout, the system told us how long we’d been working and how many calories we’d burned off. There is even a function that quantifies the calories in food.

So then they gave us food. But it was healthy, and also delicious.

After a little break for eating and drinking and mingling, we headed back to the stations to play the games included in the Wii Fit Plus. Because working out doesn’t have to be all work.

There is a chicken-wing-flapping game:

There is also an obstacle course that everyone compared to the TV show “Wipeout.” I failed miserably, running off the track into the water at the first jump. I enjoyed watching my friends having fun trying to master the games:

Friends having fun

And I’m not sure what this one was but let’s call it the Game that Made Yvonne Jump For Joy:

I also remember a balance/brain exercise game that is a combination of Simon and whack-a-mole using only your hips. I was good at that one.

Then the best part and the disclosure blah blah: after providing me with an invitation platform, a party for 17 of my friends, food, and fun, all of which was free, Nintendo gave everyone there a Wii Fit Plus. Half the crowd were bloggers and half weren’t, and you could tell at that moment. Let’s be honest – as bloggers we are not strangers to getting awesome gifts when we attend an event. I’m not saying the bloggers weren’t delighted to receive it. But the non-bloggers were as happy as my brother and I on that Christmas morning over 2 decades ago when we saw our bitchin’ Atari 2600.

And then, because I didn’t already have a Wii myself, they gave me one of those, too.

Everybody say “Wii!”

As awesome as all of that was, the item that I now use almost every day that I got at the event was the yoga jacket that the staff handed to guests on our way out. I put the jacket on and my friend Lisa said “Wow, that jacket makes you look really skinny!”

I said “I’ll take ten.”

Here are some thoughts from some of the other guests at the party:

“It’s a really fun set of games that make you enjoy getting a workout, especially the obstacle course and the hip shake/count-to-ten one. Love those! Then the way you can actually customize a workout, designed specifically for your time and needs, that’s very cool. I think it’s a very cool device.” —Sarah

“Josie and I had a great time, from the delicious smoothies that started the night to the awesome games and fun that ended it. My favorite moment in particular was watching the expression on one the Nintendo guy’s face as I utterly bombed the Snowball Fight game. ‘I’m pathetic,’ I told him. He kindly demurred and explained that I needed to move from my upper body only. ‘You’re throwing your entire weight into it,’ he said. So what else is new?” —Vicki

“Of the new games, I’d say my favorite is Obstacle Course, or whatever Nintendo calls it. It’s basically like the reality TV show where people make idiots of themselves going through an obstacle course. You get to do that without actually getting wet or injured or humiliated beyond the spectators in your TV room. Two thumbs up. ” —Michael

“It was so fun and silly and it got me laughing and forgetting about all the stresses in my single parent life. For just a little while. And, most importantly it got me hopeful that I can figure out a way to get exercise back in my life without it adding more stress by trying to make it work or costing a fortune in babysitting fees and gym memberships. It will be a while to save up for the Wii itself though.” –Sandri

“I had a great time at the Wii Fit party because I was able to do Wii yoga without a 4-year-old trying to knock me over while I did the tree pose. It was such a peaceful setting to get to know other mom bloggers and find out more about Wii. It seems that most of the problems I had with my Wii Fit have been fixed and I have renewed motivation to do yoga/workout at home now that I have a new Wii Fit Plus (thanks Nintendo!).” —Yvonne

“It is nice to exercise and hear laughing instead of moaning!!” –Kate

And now for the more awesomely awesome part. If you’ve actually gotten this far, you are lucky ducks. Nintendo has given me an additional Wii and Wii Fit Plus and I am going to give them away to a lucky commenter right here on this blog! Here are the rules:

  • Leave a comment here with a valid email address (no exceptions, even if I know you) and your answer to the question: “How would you fit some fit in with Wii Fit Plus?”
  • Entries will be accepted until 11.59pm on May 31, 2010.

I already have a Wii and Wii Fit Plus, so no need to enter me in the giveaway. I’m actually not a big fan of the balance games, but I do use a lot of the yoga and strength-training exercises, and Rhythm Boxing.

You just caught my attention when you mentioned Qbert. I wasn’t sure anyone else remembered that game.

“How would you fit some fit in with Wii Fit Plus?”

That is a good question because as we know ‘fit’ in ‘fit’ can be rather large and cumbersome. So I expect that it would take a little bit of engineering, probably more than a protractor, slide rule and abacus could handle.

The good news is that thanks to the wonders of modern technology I can simply plug in the numbers and the ‘puter will shoot out a simple response. Something along the lines of, “I’ll blog for 20 minutes less each day so that I fit my Wii in.”

I’d do this first thing in the morning – right after I get my kids out to school and push my husband out the door so he will go to work. I’ve read that the women who stick to exercising are the ones who do it in the morning. At first I thought they were saying that only morning people could stick to it, but then I realized that if I do it BEFORE anything, I won’t keep putting everything everybody else needs in front of what I need to be doing myself. Very smart!

In addition to the responsibility of taking care of two kids and all their activities and carpooling, I recently went back to work to supplement the family income. As if that weren’t enough, I also committed to help plan a fundraising event for an amazing organization. Unfortunately, this leaves much less time for the gym. If I had a Wii Fit Plus, I could squeeze in some exercise in much less time than it takes to go the gym so I wouldn’t have to sacrifice my workouts. I would also involve my kids so it is something we all do together.

Having wii Fit will help exercise “fit” into my day. I waste about an hour just traveling to and from the gym. Therefore my workout routine becomes 2+ hours. Sometimes I just can’t fit extra hour of travel time into my day so I can not get my exercise in.

I’d love to win…part of my problem with exercising is managing to get out of the house, especially as I often am a night owl and can’t go to the gym at 11 PM (or don’t feel like driving). Particularly, I’m starting med school this fall and it will be very hard to find time to go out of the house to the gym, this would let me exercise for 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there at whatever time is convenient…it would be a huge help to ensure I don’t gain weight while focusing on studying instead of my own health.

I actually work out both in the morning and at night. Usually in the morning I do pushups and lift weights, but rarely do any sort of stretching or other form of cardio. I’d integrate the Wii and Wii fit into my mornings by using as a basic warm up device. THEN, when I came home and was winding down, I’d be using it as a way to practice some yoga and a bit of cool down exercises 😀

I’d fit some Wii in on a daily basis for both me, and my mom, who I would love to let try this! My mom is disabled and can’t always leave the house to exercise, she saw the Wii and Wii Fit board and said “Hey, I could probably use that!” and I’ve been excited about getting one for her ever since. So if I win, I’ll be leaving this with my mom, but you better believe I’ll be over using it. We’ll have mutual custody of it! 🙂 Thanks so much!

…well, that would be my answer if I kept it. If I win, I’m giving this straight to my mom. I know she’s wanted one for a while, both to keep herself fit and to have something fun to play with with her grandkids while they’re over. I’m completely certain that she’d be fitting workouts in after work and before work and whenever she is able, though! And she’d let me use it sometimes, too. 🙂

Now, I’d use the Wii Fit Plus to get the weight off that was put on with all my blogging over the winter. We were so slow at work I was only working 2 days a week so I can barely fit into my pants now! Not even kidding. Not a happy feeling now since I have to try and get into my warm weather clothing. Here’s to lying on the bed trying in desperation to get the shorts/pants zipped up. My shelves, I mean hips, could use Wii Fit Plus! I would do it on my days off that I still get to enjoy…sitting on my tooshie!

Amost two weeks ago, I discovered by chance in a few clicks of a keyboard that my husband was a compulsive liar and a cheat and told him not to come home. 15 years of (happy) marriage ended in an instant and I became a single mom. My evening workouts were a highlight of my week, leaving our beautiful son home with dad for my only ‘me time’. Now I can’t do that. And I need to exercise now more than ever to somehow stay sane, strong and healthy for my sweet son. I could do Wii fit at after I put him to bed instead of crying all night. And we could do it together to put smiles on our sad faces. Either way, it would be well used and a true gift.

I’ve put on 20 pounds from the stress of planning it all (long engagement=bad idea) and although I’ve started eating healthier, I want a more quantitative and fun way to track my exercise. I’ve recently been down for the count with an illness and now that I’m getting over it, my doctor want me to start exercising and I think the yoga would be a great way to start, and the Wii looks like you can start out slow and work your way up at your own pace. Okay, here’s the thing – I’e had two hip replacements – yes, I said TWO – and doing any kind of physical “exercise” is nearly impossible. My friends and family all urge me to go to aerobics class, or walk four miles every evening, whatever. I can’t do any of it. Well, let me qualify that – I can’t do any of it AND KEEP UP WITH “NORMAL” PEOPLE. So to save embarrassment for everyone, I decline. And I have no discipline to exercise in private. Which means I get NO exercise at all.

Now, the funny thing is, I actually have played Wii – once. At my nephew’s house. He had the tennis game and I found out I am actually pretty good at it!! And guess what? I worked up a sweat and felt great, and all without the trials and tribulations of “exercising”. So I realized right then that a Wii could definitely benefit me, since it made “exercise” a game instead of a dirty word!

Unfortunately, like a lot of folks in today’s economic crunch, I cannot afford to purchase a Wii, much less a Wii Fit. That’s why when I saw this giveaway my heart just gave a lurch. I NEED THIS!!

I currently take my 90 year young Mother to therapy each day and one day each week she uses a wii fit to help gain back some mobility after a stroke. I would find the time to help her “play” games to hurry along this re-teaching her to use her limbs. And, I am certain that my kids would be more than willing to do the same, since we have no video games in the house (however, we did have an Atari 2600 years ago – and it WAS fun!).

I am definitely in need of a wii. I would wii fit in the morning, noon, and after work. Having been diagnose as type 2 diabetics as a teen, I’ve been trying to loose weight without success until a couple of years ago when I’ve managed to lose over 60 pounds but I’m still extremely overweight! Thankfully the weight loss did manage to control my diabetes but recently I have hit the plateau and find it more difficult to burn calories. This scares me because; I’ve been slowly gaining a bit of the weight back.

I have tried the wii fit demo at the mall and found it fun and quite enjoyable to exercise with but I can’t afford the price of the system however I want to get Fit with the Wii/fit! I need to get fit because I don’t want to get sick again.

Having the Wii Fit would be great…with my one year old, stepping out to the gym is no easy thing. She’ll probably be crawling all over me while I work out on the Wii (an extra workout in itself!) but it’d still be better than driving over an hour to a gym with decent daycare facilities!

I have learned that the only way I fit any kind of workout into my day is to do it first thing in the morning before I talk myself out of it or find much more important things to do, like blogging, for example, and eating. So if I wake up the kids in my workout clothes and stumble straight down to the family room where the Wii is waiting for me to trip over it, I will definitely be able to fit Wii Fit plus into my day.

Being a single parent, raising four kids, which three are on their own now, since it is just me and the little one who is a 15 year old teenage boy it will give us more time to do things together as a family since both of us want to work out together. That means we would use WII in the beginning like twice a week then as each week increase it to were both of us are getting fit together.

I would really love to win this one. Believe it or not my mom’s Dr. suggested that I get a WII for my mom. She is in a wheel chair and there is not many exercise programs for people in a wheel chair. Playing WII is fun and you don’t feel like your exercising and this would enable her to move her arms and legs while she was playing thus building her muscles and getting her strength back as well as being able to loose a little weight. She used to love to bowl and dance so I know that she would love the bowling game that comes with the system and I just read on your site that the wii fit has the chicken dance and even though she can’t stand very well she can flap her arms and I know she would love that. Even though I get lots of exercise taking care of her all day the wii fit would allow me to get the right exercise and lose some much needed weight and stress.

I’m currently working three jobs and have been for the past few years. Trying to fit exercise into that is a near impossibility, especially with the volatile weather we get here. As a result, middle-age (ahem) spread has come to visit and I need to kick it to the curb. Having the Wii Fit system would be great for squeezing in that quick workout in the mornings and that rare evening off. And let’s face it, the fun of it doesn’t hurt the motivation either. It will also be a great way for my teens and I to share time rather than vegging in front of the TV.

My husband and I both need to lose weight. I just started a physician-monitored program, but it’s hard to find time to exercise. We have some bad elements in our neighborhood, so we’ve cut out the walks we used to take around here. We try to walk downtown (where we work), but if there’s bad weather or an errand we need to run before the store closes or something, then we head out. With the Wii and Wii Fit, we could exercise indoors no matter what the conditions are outside, we can exercise after dark, whenever we have time, we have a way besides just boring old jogging in place.

I am currently trying to lose weight and with 2 children, running around all day and not really having time to go to the gym, I would use this as part of my morning work out, which I hear is beneficial and so I am really crossing my fingers on this one!! 🙂

I would use it to get a little fitness in over the weekends. My family works so hard to keep things going and in order, and they could use the fun time. I’m so busy at school trying to get into a good university, so time over the weekends is all I really have to get in a little fun and fitness. My parents are saving up the money for me, which I am very thankful to them for, so we all could really use the time together to get fit…as a family!!!

I’m an “empty-nester” and the grandmother of two (soon to be three!) I’ve found that having too much time on my hands add up to putting on the pounds. When you have little ones to care for, you have no time to eat and are constantly active! I used to be 115 lbs. after 2 children, but now have a tough time losing the weight. I’d make an appointment with myself daily to have “me time” for a Wii Workout!
