My 2010 New Year’s Resolutions and How I’m Doing So Far

January 7, 2010 Kim Tracy Prince 4 Comments

I know resolutions should be constructive and I should focus on augmenting the positive things about my life and my self instead of focusing on negative things. Concentrating on the positive is central to meditative practices, like the yoga that I love, and any self-help method. However, when I sat down to think about what I’d like to change, I couldn’t think of any positive things that I can make more positive. It’s the negative things in my life and in my self that I want to reduce or eliminate altogether. And so, here are my resolutions.

1. Eat less. FAIL

2. Eat healthier food. MEH – every now and then I choke down a salad. Or some fruit. But mostly I like to eat whatever is easy.

3. Exercise more. IF YOU COUNT CHASING BRADY INTO HIS ROOM AND LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY WHEN I TICKLE HIM: WIN

4. Complain less. GOD IT’S SO ANNOYING THAT I TOTALLY FAIL

5. De-clutter the house. WIN WIN WIN

6. Stop getting so jealous when I see people on Twitter talking about parties that I’m not invited to. I mean, with all the people I follow and all the people they follow, I hear about so many events that there’s no way I could attend most of them anyway. And it’s okay for me to not be invited. I want to let go of this. So far I’m not doing so great, but I’m working on it. Let’s call it a FWIN.

7. Waste less time on Twitter. FAIL

8. Stop doing that thing where I slip into the accent of whatever person I’m talking to. If I’m having a conversation in London, for example, I start dropping the word “lovely” into every sentence. When I meet a Southerner, suddenly I have a Southern accent. Here in Los Angeles every other person is Mexican or Armenian or Israeli and so I affect the accent of their speech. I even do it with Brady, slipping into the reduced-word speech of a two-year-old. “Mommy show you!” I will say, instead of speaking to him in my regular voice. Stewart is disgusted by this involuntary habit of mine, and so I’ve been catching myself in the middle of a sentence and trying very hard to revert back to my own natural speech. If you watched me at my yard sale last weekend, however, you would see that so far, at this resolution, I absolutely FAIL.

9. Take more pictures and video of the children. I’ve been slacking off on that, which is ridiculous considering my wealth of camera power. I now have a digital SLR, a FlipCam, a Kodak digitil HD mini cam, and a children’s Kid Tough digital camera. And an iPhone. No excuse.

So far, WIN:

I have that tendency to pick up accents too, particularly around Southerners and New Yorkers. Not usually with two-year-olds, though.
And when you figure out the secret to #6, please let me in on it. I get bothered about that (and hearing about events after the fact, and wondering WHY I wasn’t asked) much more than I should. The insecure, fringe-dwelling adolescent in me still, I suppose.
Congrats on your WINs so far, though!

Ok I have to confess that I find myself also at times picking up accents, phrases etc. and wonder if people think I am mocking them. I thought it was just some weird thing I do.

I love hearing little kids laugh!
Good work on the goals so far…and for the current fails, well you do have a whole year to work on them! 🙂
