This is week 2 of the New Deal in the Prince household. It still feels temporary, like vacation, because there hasn’t yet been a full week of school. I took two days off before 9/1 to just hang out with Kyle. We went to the observatory and the park and Supercuts. We loafed around the house and watched too many episodes of Spongebob Squarepants (which, by the way, I’m convinced is written by drug-addled minds). (Not that it’s bad. It’s so bad, it’s good, you know what I’m saying?)
So, now that I use “TARTAR SAUCE” as a curse and the theme song to the show runs through my head incessantly, the kid is in Kindergarten. In this second week he only had two days of school, what with all the wanton holidays in the schedule. (And already I get a call from the school health clerk. No school nurse, of course. Those are just another old wives tale in the era of public school systems gone broke. Kyle fell off the monkey bars and hurt his wrist. But he’s okay!) Labor Day this, teacher banking day that, Jewish New Year the other. Next week we’ll start 8 straight full weeks of school. And every day it’ll go a little sumpin’ like this:
Busy busy busy busy busy busy now what?
Ah, the luxury. And the ohmyGodwhathaveIdone of it! I signed Kyle up for an after-school class at the YMCA on Tuesdays – it’s exercise and games and fitness and health and it was a reasonable price, more reasonable than the dollar signs on all the enrichment classes and sports programs at the school.
In two weeks Brady will start preschool, and then every day at 2:30 pm I’ll have both of them in custody, with hours to play, bond, discipline, instruct, cavort, love, and experience before bedtime. So far it’s just been me and Kyle, and when he gets bored I simply switch activities and we move on. Not so bad. But with both of them I’ll have a soundtrack of continuous fighting. My goal is to turn that into happy brother work and play.
Someone send tequila?

Yep. It’s a totally different world when you get two boys together. Laugh, fight, cry, laugh, fight, cry over and over all day long. Fun.
