It all started with this chicken. My mother sent it, of course.
If you squeeze the chicken’s wing, it plays The Chicken Dance. Stewart taught Kyle the moves, so now when he plays the music he flaps his arms, grins from ear to ear, and spazzes out.
We opened this present a few hours before our dinner guests arrived. It set Kyle’s mood appropriately, for we were also planning to celebrate Kyle’s birthday after Easter dinner. I had made a cake and more guests were scheduled to arrive in the evening.
Kyle stayed true to form through dinner, lighting up when he saw the dinner candles lit, saying “BertDay? BertDay?” and finally pointing and me and demanding “Song!” until everyone was singing “Happy Birthday” to him as he looked around the table beaming with a look on his face that said “Who, me?”

After dinner we headed outside to hide and find the Easter eggs that I had colored the night before. It took some, okay a lot of, coaxing, but once Kyle got into the swing of things he found all six of the eggs and then proceeded to take them out of the basket and count them, then put them back in and count them, and repeat, etc. etc. So by the time we were ready to present the cake and sing Happy Birthday for real, he was totally distracted and the eggs were, in effect, toast. Cracked and bruised and licked by the dog and stinking. So much for the hard-boiled egg breakfast I had planned for this morning.

When the big moment finally arrived, Kyle was dumbstruck. He’s been singing “Happy Birthday to Jacob” for weeks, ever since Jacob’s birthday party with the Elmo cake. I hope he wasn’t too disappointed in Mom’s ghetto homemade cake. Actually, I know he wasn’t because he ate it with the gusto of a castaway eating pizza again after 4 years on the island.

Later, when it was time for presents, I again had to coax Kyle into paying attention. He was obsessed with the small pots of Play-Do that were in his Easter basket, and not so much into the things that were wrapped up all pretty for his birthday. He kept walking around telling everyone “Pay-Do? Pay-Do?” do you see my frickin’ Play-Do over here, people?!

In general, Kyle entertained all of the guests with his charming personality. Someone remarked that he has the makings of a great emcee. Someone else said “This is the best 2-year-old birthday I’ve ever been to!” because there were no OTHER 2-year-olds there. Kyle didn’t miss them. Nobody to steal his thunder.

I wound up putting him to bed around 9pm. We reviewed the events of the day, a practice I am trying to do every day, to teach him past tense. Mostly it’s me saying what happened that day and him piping in with a word or two in his sweet 2-year-old boy voice:

“We had birthday cake…”

“Cake?”

“And presents…”

“Presents?”

“And you hunted for Easter eggs…”

“Eggs?”

And so on. He was an absolute doll to the moment I left the room and turned out the lights. Sigh. If only his two-year-old-ness could be like this every day.

    How fun!! Sounds like a great day. I may try the 2 year old party with few other 2 year olds. Sounds like it worked well. Jacks practiced singing HB to “Frieeeennnnnnd” so when we sang it to Daddy, he was VERY confused.
    Love the pics.

    I am a big fan of less children attending parties, too. It has worked well for us the last 2 years.
