Life Before the Internet

February 1, 2005 Kim Tracy Prince Leave a Comment

I remember my first Real Job – as a minion at an insurance company. It was 1994. I wore blue suits and dresses that only teachers should wear. I pulled my hair up in a clip and had big glasses. I walked around in patent leather heels or “flats.” I was hot!

But it was B.I. – Before the Internet. I can’t remember what I used to do at this job when I was bored. I really can’t. Maybe I was never bored. But that can’t be true. Every job has its boring moments, when nobody is paying attention to what you are doing and you have finished all your work ahead of deadline and you’re too burnt out to offer to help someone else. So what did we do? Personal phone calls? Maybe. Flirt with insurance salesmen? Possibly. But even THAT gets boring after a while.

I thank God for the internet every time I use my computer. Well, except when I get a virus or a worm or spyware, which I’ve been getting a lot of lately. Anyway, I’ll keep this comment about work and boredom and the internet as nonspecific as possible because people I work for now or have worked for in the past will definitely read this, against all popular warning and the interview with Heather Armstrong on NPR. Let me just say THANK GOD FOR THE INTERNET WHILE I’M BORED AT WORK.
