I remember a friend of mine once said she never made New Year’s resolutions because she thought it was important to live the way you want to live all year round. That made me feel guilty for slacking off as October creeps up on me. Yet, I do it every year.
Before I make my list for this year, let’s look back at 2010 and see how I did:
How I Did On My 2010 New Year’s Resolutions
1. Eat less. FAIL
2. Eat healthier food. I DID PRETTY WELL FOR A WHILE, BUT IT’S GOOD TO RENEW THAT ONE
3. Exercise more. SAME AS ABOVE
4. Complain less. FAIL. THAT SUCKS.
5. De-clutter the house. BIG WIN. WE SOLD OUR HOUSE IN ONE WEEK.
6. Stop getting so jealous when I see people on Twitter talking about parties that I’m not invited to. I mean, with all the people I follow and all the people they follow, I hear about so many events that there’s no way I could attend most of them anyway. And it’s okay for me to not be invited. I want to let go of this. I DID WELL WITH THIS ONE, ALTHOUGH I DID NOT FULLY VANQUISH THE GREEN MONSTER WITHIN ME. HAVE YOU?
7. Waste less time on Twitter. WIN! I NO LONGER CONSIDER TWITTER TIME WASTED. IT IS A VALUABLE TOOL, EVEN THOUGH SOMETIMES IT LOOKS LIKE I’M JUST GOOFING OFF.
8. Stop doing that thing where I slip into the accent of whatever person I’m talking to. If I’m having a conversation in London, for example, I start dropping the word “lovely” into every sentence. When I meet a Southerner, suddenly I have a Southern accent. Here in Los Angeles every other person is Mexican or Armenian or Israeli and so I affect the accent of their speech. I even do it with Brady, slipping into the reduced-word speech of a two-year-old. “Mommy show you!” I will say, instead of speaking to him in my regular voice. Stewart is disgusted by this involuntary habit of mine, and so I’ve been catching myself in the middle of a sentence and trying very hard to revert back to my own natural speech. WIN. I THINK BEFORE I SPEAK IN THESE SITUATIONS. I TALK MORE SLOWLY, BUT HOPEFULLY LESS ANNOYINGLY.
9. Take more pictures and video of the children. I’ve been slacking off on that, which is ridiculous considering my wealth of camera power. I now have a digital SLR, a FlipCam, a Kodak digitil HD mini cam, and a children’s Kid Tough digital camera. And an iPhone. No excuse. WIN! I’LL POST A YEAR IN PICTURES OF THEM SOON.
My 2011 New Year’s Resolutions:
(in addition to the unresolved ones above)
1. Focus. The unfortunate slow-down in the entertainment industry gave way for my freelance writing and editing career, which I love. However, I have to be careful not to spread myself too thin. That’s what I have always done before, with moderate success in each venture. I believe that to increase success in a few, I have to drop some. It will be hard for me to eliminate anything, since I love it all! But in the coming weeks, you’ll see some changes around here.
I actually can’t think of another one. Maybe I’m doing well on the focusing after all.
Happy new year, friends and programs!

FOCUS.
I like it.
Happy 2011 to you & your family!
