House of Pies

June 20, 2007 Kim Tracy Prince 6 Comments

No, seriously, I went to the House of Pies in Los Feliz today. It seems a theme in my life right now. Maybe it’s a sign that I should make a pie. House of Pies is a bastion of un-hipness in an area of Los Angeles that is very, very hip. So hip that the young men carry man purses and sport purposely tousled hair and everyone wears sunglasses and talks about their latest ADR session and how bad the craft service was. House of Pies was so uncool that it was cool, and we were trendsetters as we sat in the nearly empty diner with the blue-haired ladies (there are some left!) and their gentlemen.

The pie was delicious. Strawberry cream, if you must know.

When I got home Brady and I took a little nap and I am now sitting here trying to figure out what to do with the “me time” I have coming to me this evening. Stewart offered to let me take off by myself for a couple of hours, “to the mall or something.” I gratefully accepted, scoffing inwardly at the mall. “Ha! How suburban. Surely I can come up with something better.”

But I can’t. I can’t actually think of something that I have been wanting to do solely for myself. I have a list of errands and things to return and gift cards to spend but they are all for the kids or the household. I would love to go exercise but I think I broke my toe (oh yeah, didn’t I tell you? I really think I broke my toe. I see a doctor next week about it, but until then I limp mournfully about, which also negates a full-on shopping spree at the mall) so that’s out.

The best I can do is imagine myself browsing at Borders and maybe selecting a book and sitting in a cozy chair and drinking a nice decaf latte (because caffeine and I are no longer friends the way we once were). I don’t even know if I will enjoy that because I feel a bit guilty that I’ll just be sitting around while Stewart tends to the circus here at home. On the other hand, behind the scenes here at the House of Prince there have been several instances in which I have almost, almost lost my mind. If don’t get some of that “me time” I think I might actually do it.

Oh, don’t lose your mind. Come very close if you must, but don’t actually do so. Now. About the pies and the hipness. I am so very unhip that I don’t even know what “ADR session” or “craft service” are. Maybe they are Calif. things? And as for the blue-haired ladies. The reason you rarely see them is because they all live at the opposite end of the country, in Florida. The town in which I live actually has the distinction of having one of the oldest average ages in the nation!

Yeah, the bookstore is my favorite place to go for “me” time. I also like to go to the library, geek that I am.
House of Pies sounds good. I’ll have to check it out.

Wow. We both had the night off. Next time call me and we will walk the malls together.

I am definitely in favor of you heading to the book store – or to the movies. Nothing distracts me like the movies! When you start feeling guilty just remember that your husband doesn’t want you to go crazy -thus the reason he volunteered.
    Pie. Yum.

Did you see Waitress? Probably not, what with the baby and all. Anyway, House of Pies made me think of Waitress and Waitress is cool so the pies must be, too. But, I’m with Lisa- you lost me on ADR session and craft services are a foreign language to me.
