This One Is For Lisa at Mamalife

August 14, 2006 Kim Tracy Prince 9 Comments

It’s reader appreciation day here at HOP. Lisa asked about quilts more than once. Here are some pics for her of MomHOP’s handiwork. I know there are more quilty fans lurking. Show your love, people.

For our wedding in 2003, my mother wanted to make us a quilt. She asked me what colors I wanted. You can’t tell in this picture but at the time I had dreams of a blue and white bedroom. I wanted a white bed. I couldn’t imagine how she would pull off a white quilt. Three years later I have already washed it once, but not well. It needs another washing. I need an expert quilt washer to do it for me, or I fear I will ruin this new family heirloom.

Three years later, we do have blue walls. I’ve shown you those before.

My God, this quilt is gorgeous. MomHOP is truly talented and I’m glad to hear she is home and on the mend.

Wow. I’ve always wanted to try a Mariner’s Compass but haven’t dared yet. My mom made a Double Wedding Ring for us 6 years ago and reversed the background from the traditional white to navy blue. It’s pretty cool. I like how peaceful yours is.

For those who are interested in the Mariner’s Compass, it is 36 inches across and I had to buy a special drafting tool to draft it on my kitchen floor. I used the paper-piecing method and when I first had to cut the sections apart I was afraid I might destroy all the work I had put into the drafting part. But as you can see it worked out fine. The label has yet to be put on the quilt, but it describes the symbolism of marriage particular to this HOP couple’s life in the compass and the ocean waves border.
I spent a year and a half thinking about the design, drafting the design, searching for appropriate fabrics and constructing the top. BUT, my daughter actually received her quilt top at her rehearsal dinner, and the completed quilt at Thanksgiving, 5 months later, quicker than any of my friends who did wedding quilts for their daughters.
Now it’s time to design a new one for Kim’s sister Laura for her wedding.

That is so beautiful! Usually I’m not a big quilt person but anyone would love that one.
