You Don’t Know What You’ve Got Until It’s Gone

June 6, 2005 Kim Tracy Prince 21 Comments

Dear Internet,

I almost lost you. And it was horrible. And it happened the same day I lost my cool over Kyle’s no-nap situation.

See, what happened was, I clicked on one of them e-mail attachments like a TOTAL DUMBASS. Nothing happened. And then I realized what I had done. A lethal virus was unleashed inside the very computer that I built last summer.

For the rest of the day I was pre-occupied with my sick computer. My geek level is not high, but I know enough to be dangerous, so I tried tinkering with it. I couldn’t open Norton Anti-virus. I couldn’t get to their website. I couldn’t open several other programs, including the task manager or even the computer’s registry. Finally I gave up because I know my mommy brain would cause me to render the computer totally useless. But I was scared, dammit. Really scared.

Enter my handsome Prince, who brought home the NEW version of Norton Antivirus. Eventually I was able to install the program, run a virus scan, and get rid of my nasty bug.

Whew.

In the hours previous, I contemplated a near future without my only escape from this house of wakened hell. I love, so much, coming on to the internet to see comments on this site, to check out all the other blogs I read, and to visit my mommy message board. And other such surf. I can check news, weather, stock quotes (as IF, ha!), and anything I have a curiosity about. Sometimes Kyle comes with me. Sometimes I can only sit here for 2 minutes before he beckons me to serve him. But it’s enough to tide me over.

What’s the lesson here, then? Back up your files? Make sure you’re running virus software? Stop clicking on those stupid attachments, you dumbass?

No. The answer is to get a backup computer just in case, and to hunt down those assholes who created the virus and run them over with a truck.

In related internet topics, I want to share with you that I finally organized my ‘favorites’ into a folder so I can now speed-click through all the blogs I love to check. It makes for much more efficient surfing.

Lastly, I pose a question to those of you who have such pretty blogs. How do I put links on the side of this page? I don’t really understand HTML and I only have this blog because Blogger makes it possible for any dumbass to put her life story out there on the internet.

Ok, I’m a total computer idiot. In fact the joke in our office right now – we are getting a new computer system and going paperless on our charting – the computer geek/god wanted to show me how to do something on this computer and I’m all “Oh no, I don’t want to know any more than I absolutely must to survive my day” and he is all “But I can feed you a fish for dinner tonight or teach you to fish so you can feed yourself forever” and I’m all “Just feed me a fish, I don’t want to learn how to fish” so this is the joke “JUST GIVE ME A FISH”!! Ok, but I digress… to add things to the side of your page (like other links) … on http://www.blogspot.com when you pull up your blog, click on “change settings” then click on “template” … scroll down until you find “add things to your sidebar here”
for the link you want to add, type:
    mamalife
there is a space betwen the “a” and “href” … no other spaces.
when you are done you have to hit the orange “save template changes” at the bottom of the page, then the blue “republish blog” button on the next page that comes up…. hope it works.

Mothering a baby WITHOUT THE INTERNET? Two words: Nightmare fodder. Glad your computer is okay. I can’t help you out with the links ’cause I don’t use Blogspot. Actually if I had to do it all over again I would have bought an account with Typepad instead of Blogdrive. I often think about switching but then again that was the kind of stuff I used to do in my old life, before my very existance became dedicated to changing, feeding, and burping a newborn. (Who looks pretty darn cute today in her little striped socks!). Hope you’re well.

Look on the help menu at blogspot.com on the right sidebar… there are some things there… you can also e-mail them for help and they will e-mail you back. I totally hear the “Argh” when it comes to computers!

Hi… Lisa sent me to help you figure out how to put a blogroll or some links on your sidebar. It’s much easier to explain the html in an email because if I put it up here it won’t say what it will do it will only do it. Hmm that sounds confusing.. email me!
