Driving around the old ‘hood, I was listening to the local radio station’s 80’s weekend. It was a Richard Marx rock block – old classics like “Don’t Mean Nothin” and “Shoulda Known Better.” It brought me back to the time in high school when I went to see Rich in concert. Somehow I ended up in or near the front row and guess what happened. He looked me in the eyes and sang to me. And though we have drifted apart over the years, I know he still carries that torch for me, and I feel bad that I broke his heart.
(I wrote this in 2007. I found it in draft. I still like it.)

You sure he wasn’t staring into the eyes of the guy you dragged to that concert?
Man, that hair! He looks like every girl in my high school yearbook. And yours, for that matter.
The guitarist from Cheap Trick sang to me once…or guitared for me once. They were the opening act for Stone Temple Pilots down in San Diego. That was my most favorite concert ever. Does that mean he loves me too?
p.s. I don’t even know who Richard Marx is. You’re old and stuff.
I don’t know who Richard Marx is, either. And I was technically cognizant then.
@Desiree, you’re fired.
I saw Richard Marx at ND…were you there with me? I was not in the front row though…
I miss the 80’s : )
I love the 80s and love Richard Marx. My favorite song is “Right Here Waiting for You”.
He totally still carries a torch for you. There is definitely a look of longing in all his photos. 😉
I saw him like 4 times in my early teens. I was one of those annoying girls that yelled out “I LOVE YOU RICHARD!” and screamed. Dear god, I’m embarrassed and amazed at myself.
I knew him back in the day. He went by Richard, but he preferred Dick. He did have his way with women at times and used to joke about leaving them with “dick marks”. Ah, the 80’s.
@Dave, THAT is hilarious if it is true.
