I Loves My Preciousssss

April 20, 2010 Kim Tracy Prince 5 Comments

Macbook pro
I will buy it, I will love it, and I will name it Georgia.

Okay, so maybe a laptop computer is a very, very sad substitute for the daughter I will never have.  Still, I’m as excited about getting my new computer as I was the day I went to the OB and said “I’m ready to have this baby today, can I?” and he said “Sure!”

My Dell laptop has been dying a long, slow death for many months, and last weekend I just went ahead and put it down.  I re-installed Windows (after backing everything up in triplicate) and still, the computer shut itself down without warning after a few minutes.  I sighed, gave up on it, gathered all of its software and peripherals, and put it in the corner.  Now I’m looking for a place to recycle it.

I was hesitant at first to buy the Mac I’ve wanted for years because it is quite a financial investment, and since we just bought a new house, I’m reluctant to make a major equipment purchase at this time.  But then one day I had a few extra minutes between depositing the proceeds from selling our house and picking up the kids and so I wandered in to the Apple store and came upon the new 13″ MacBook Pro.  I touched it, and it sprang to life.  We melded together like the Nav’i and their horse-like creatures meld with their wiggly hair-antennae.  This computer was made for me.  It chose me.  It must be mine!

Not to mention that I am hoping the Mac will eliminate the need to buy a new computer every 2+ years, or the hours spent on the phone with tech support, or the constant need to refresh virus definitions.  I am hoping that the MBP will increase my productivity and the quality of my mental health.  In short, I am looking to Apple for salvation.

I’m still poking around to find the best deal, and in the meantime I am using Stewart’s old Sony Vaio laptop.  The beauty of doing almost everything online, while a bit risky because of the privacy issues, is that all is saved up here in the cloud, waiting to be downloaded once I get my new buddy set up and running.

*I’m participating in a contest at Best Kids Apps, a blog about iPhone apps for kids, for a chance to win an iPad.

I just bought my first Mac. I still use my PC for word processing, though. Mainly because I’m scared I’m going to mess up the Mac or get it dirty because it’s so damn pretty. Hope you go and get it!

That’s hilarious. It reminds me of when I switched from a paper planner to a Palm Pilot, but carried them both around everywhere until I could really let go of the paper. (I still write to-do lists on paper and stash them random places.)

I have a 2.5-year-old MacBook, and I love it. I covet a Pro, but can’t justify the upgrade yet when this one is still just fine (I had to replace the hard drive a couple of months ago, but everything was backed up, so it wasn’t a big deal.)

Apple doesn’t usually allow a lot of price flexibility, though, so good luck finding that deal. But you probably will buy it, and when you do, you WILL love it.

You are going to LOVE your Macbook. Once you take a sip of Steve Job’s koolaid, you never turn back.
    ENJOY!

Once you go Mac, you never go back. Good luck with your purchase. You won’t regret it. We are a five computer family. My poor, deluded children have three PCs (in part because my stepson works for Microsoft), while I enjoy the company, stability and productivity of a fab desktop PowerMac with an unbelievably beautiful 23″ monitor + Macbook. I know, I’m one lucky writer. Enjoy.
