Toward the end of 2010, I discovered I was only a handful of followers away from hitting 3,000. For me, that’s a long way from the approximately 500 I had before my pal Neil Gaiman helped me get 3 times that. So I put out a call for new followers, and impulsively offered a prize. I told people I would give a bag o’ swag to a random follower if I hit 3,000 by midnight on 12/31/10.
The “bag” became a box when swag came from Fresh and Easy – a tin of hot chocolate mix and another of pumpkin waffle mix – and also from Nintendo – a copy of Wii Sports Resort. I threw in various other bits of swag I had laying around: stickers, a yo-yo, a miniature skateboard, a gift card, etc. And I hit the 3,000 on time, so I drew the winner using Tweet Randomizer.
Problem was, I didn’t specific that the winner had to live in the U.S. And guess what! She doesn’t!
@androidjen lives in the Cayman Islands (I feel okay telling you that because she has her global location posted on her Twitter page) and seems young enough to enjoy everything that I sent. She has been following me since the big What Is Twitter storm in March of 2009, and I’m happy that she won. Thanks go out to all who helped me get new followers, those new followers themselves, the people who haven’t unfollowed me, Brand About Town, Fresh and Easy, Razor Scooters, and of course, Neil Gaiman.
