In January I did a massive decluttering of my house. I filled a corner of the garage with boxes of items that we don’t use all the time. I gave away hundreds of dollars worth of stuff using Freecycle. I sold a crib, a changing table, a refrigerator, a steel desk, two surfboards, and a VCR. I had a yard sale and sold a bunch more. The house is less crowded, easier to clean, and much more calming a space to inhabit.
I cleaned out my car to match my house, and at work I have always kept my desk clean, my projects organized, and my to-do list up to date.
So why does my mind still feel cluttered?
It’s this.
I have this blog and its companion review blog, Uptake, Roost, LA Moms Blog, Help a Mother Out, and the various spaces that request my content occasionally. I have events, giveaways, reviews, and product features. I follow over 1,500 people on Twitter and over 300 on Facebook. All of it is fun, much of it is interesting, and a few parts are actually lucrative.
So what’s really important? If I apply my decluttering skills to the online space, what elements do I use all the time? What actually nourishes me, or feels like a calm space to inhabit? What should go into the boxes in the closet, or the yard sale, or the Dumpster?
Thus begins the Great Internet Simplification Project of 2010. I think it will take a while.
Any suggestions?
