Eight Months: On Kyle Becoming a Person

December 14, 2005 Kim Tracy Prince 25 Comments

During the last few weeks Kyle has changed up his routine a bit and included some things that make him seem not merely a Baby but actually a Person. For example, Sunday morning he was hanging out in bed with Gramma and he offered her his pacifier. He tried to stick it in her mouth! He has also been waving more deliberately and in response to people waving to him. He plays peek-a-boo by turning his head away from you and then whipping it back to face you with a huge smile of expectation that he has delighted you beyond your belief. He is a huge attention hog – whenever he sees a new person he puts on the big Ham Grin and leans over in that Britney Spears tilted head “I’m so cute” way, but MUCH cuter.

It’s amazing to watch Kyle exhibit actual Personality Traits that make me capitalize where I wouldn’t normally, because all along I would say to Stewart that I couldn’t believe I was pregnant, then I couldn’t believe we had a baby, and now I still can’t believe that this little boy is something we made. The thought gives me pause and I am filled with such wordless love and I hold him tightly and try not to cry, try to savor these moments and not worry about the future in which he will become independent of me and ask me to pick him up on the corner so his friends won’t see him with his very uncool Mom.

In other motor skills news, the crawling is proceeding at great speed. Now if Kyle wants to go somewhere, and he is unfettered by someone’s arms, an exersaucer, a playpen, or a booster seat, he can pretty much go there. This morning he tried to go to the open dishwasher. Thank God Kyle has not picked up too much speed, because I was able to thwart his little plan and get the dishwasher closed before he climbed up into it the way our cat does. Last week we went to visit friends and they had a train on tracks around their Christmas tree. They assured me that this train was cheap and they wouldn’t mind if Kyle destroyed it. He watched it go around the tracks a few times – it would disappear around the back of the tree (where the kitten waited on the other side to pounce) and after a few go-arounds he deduced that the train would reappear on the other side of the tree if he watched closely enough. Then he would lunge at it with his King Kong paws and lift the tiny train people to their deaths.

Kyle has perfected the pincer grasp, that effort of motion which the baby books differentiate from “the rake.” He enjoys eating veggie puffs one at a time but would much prefer to put them ALL IN HIS MOUTH AT ONCE and then try to swallow them. I gave him Cheerios for the first time two days ago and he quite enjoys them as well. He’ll grab one with his meaty little thumb and forefinger and nibble on it with his tiny two teeth. It actually makes a little crunch sound.

Food and the eating of it continues to be a source of fascination and adventure for both Kyle and anyone in his vicinity at mealtimes. He has long been able to hold his bottle by himself, and now he can play with the bottle or fling it across a room if it displeases him or if he is finished eating. He is very communicative – if for some reason the nipple is clogged he will let you know. As for solids, Kyle has started eating meat – hooray meat! I told him long ago while he watched me make dinner for Daddy and me that he would enjoy it someday, and that day has come. It is a rare food that Kyle refuses anyway, but apparently he LOVES apples and chicken. The doctor told me that he can eat yogurt now, too. Stay tuned for the results of that test.

Speaking of communicative and not sleeping through the night, a few nights ago during a wee hour awakening, I was sitting in the other room after the nth time of getting up to soothe him and I was listening to his cries, waiting for the next five minute mark at which I would return to his bedside. His cries faded to a wan yell, and then he did the most amazing thing: he formed consonant sounds! It went something like this:
“WAAAAAAAAH!”
“Aaaaaah”
“Raa Raa Raa Raa Raa”
And I am sure that given enough more time it would have continued like this:
“Raa Raa Maa Maa”
“Maa Maa Mooom!”
“Mom! Mom! Mom!”
“Mom, come get me out of this f*#&%ing bed right NOW!!!!”

And ever since then Kyle will babble that little Raa Raa sound when he is particularly plaintive or just babbling. The only sucky thing about it is that Stewart is not around to hear it, which was the thing he was afraid of when agreeing to let us leave him for three weeks.

Our extended visit seems to have cheered up various members of our family. That was the whole point. Yesterday we finally brought Kyle to the hospital to see my grandfather. He was dressed in a Santa suit (Kyle, not my grandfather) and of course he was the cutest thing ever.

We held Kyle up for my Grampa to see, and after a minute or two he opened his eyes wide and smiled and stuck his tongue out at the baby. It was the most animated I have seen him since I’ve been here. He is recovering from head trauma, and while he is definitely improving he is still far from being good as new, and it’s been difficult for me to tell if he recognizes me or knows that I am there. I can’t tell what he hears, and I can’t make out any words he is trying to say. But last night, interacting with Kyle, his expression couldn’t be more clear. It was true love.

That, my friends, is the essence of my son. True love. And now it’s evident that he is that way on purpose, and not just as a by-product of Babyness. What a lucky, lucky world it is to have him in it.

OK, I’ve learned my lesson. I should NOT read these posts while I’m supposed to be working, because now I am crying.
Lucky we are. But give yourself credit too- it is a lot of hard work!

What an incredibly beautiful post. I hope you save it for Kyle to read one day when he is all grown up, so he knows how incredibly much his mama loves him. I, too, think the whole personality-emerging-thing is so incredibly magical. My favorite picture in this post is the one with such an intense look of concentration on his face with the train!

That was great! And eerie how similar our 2 boys are though almost 3 months apart – I laughed about the 2 tiny teeth making a crunch sound because I hear it in my house, too (when he’s not snarfing then and swallowing them whole)!
And hooray for yogurt! In my humble opinion it is THE BEST BABY FOOD GOD MADE. You can mix it with all kinds of fruits and it’s yummy and good for you.

Make no mistake: Our mission at Tip Top Equities is to sift through the thousands of underperforming companies out there to find the golden needle in the haystack. A stock worthy of your investment. A stock with the potential for big returns. More often than not, the stocks we profile show a significant increase in stock price, sometimes in days, not months or years. We have come across what we feel is one of those rare deals that the public has not heard about yet. Read on to find out more.

Nano Superlattice Technology Inc. (OTCBB Symbol: NSLT) is a nanotechnology company engaged in the coating of tools and components with nano structured PVD coatings for high-tech industries.

Nano utilizes Arc Bond Sputtering and Superlattice technology to apply multi-layers of super-hard elemental coatings on an array of precision products to achieve a variety of physical properties. The application of the coating on industrial products is designed to change their physical properties, improving a product’s durability, resistance, chemical and physical characteristics as well as performance. Nano’s super-hard alloy coating materials were especially developed for printed circuit board drills in response to special market requirements

The cutting of circuit boards causes severe wear on the cutting edge of drills and routers. With the increased miniaturization of personal electronics devices the dimensions of holes and cut aways are currently less than 0.2 mm. Nano coats tools with an ultra thin coating (only a few nanometers in thickness) of nitrides which can have a hardness of up to half that of diamond. This has proven to increase tool life by almost ten times. Nano plans to continue research and development into these techniques due to the vast application range for this type of nanotechnology

We believe that Nano is a company on the move. With todays steady move towards miniaturization we feel that Nano is a company with the right product at the right time. It is our opinion that an investment in Nano will produce great returns for our readers.
