One of the most delightful things about having a child is watching him learn. Sometimes when we are playing or reading or even watching TV, he stops what he’s doing/saying/destroying and he THINKS. You can see it happening and you can almost see the synapses firing and the neurons growing and the connections forming. “I get it!” says his expression, and then he leans forward, opens his mouth, and declares;
“BAH!”
He is very proud of his basketball and the fact that he knows what to call it. Every morning after he wakes up Stewart brings him out to the living room and I try to sleep a little bit more, but I can’t because of all the noise in our neighborhood, punctuated by THUMP “Ball!”…THUMP “Ball!” from down the hall.
Kyle also has a new obsession with Things That Fly. If we’re outside and an airplane or helicopter or bird goes by, he is the first to point it out and yell “Da!” Last night we were playing with his new red football in the front yard before dinner and he pointed at something in the sky. It was the moon, showing itself as a thin white crescent in the pale blue evening sky. “Moon!” I said, and he smiled his toothy smile and said “Da!”
It took about a year of saying “Ball” and signing the word and showing him a ball to get him to say “Ball.” Here’s hoping that he’s caught on to the whole word-means-thing idea, and it won’t take him another year to learn another word.
This morning I asked him “Where’s Daddy?” and he turned toward Stewart, pointed, and cried “Da-Yee!” Then I asked “Where’s Mommy?” and he just kept looking out the window like he never even heard me.

Say….GRAMMA!!!
I know exactly what you mean!
Cosette has started saying “mommy” so clearly that it startles me. She is also obsessed with flying objects, but she calls them all Birds.
Aren’t those brain cells clicking amazing? Jacks has been doing woof woof for doggie (and saying doggie thanks to Tess, his daddies doggie), ack, ack for duckies, and roar for bear, but just in the two days I have been saying tweet for birdie, and this AM, he pointed to the birdie in “Are you my Mother” (which could be an entire post in itself) and said “tweet.” It all comes so fast! Jackson will say mom if I prod him, but if you ask where daddy is, he will go to the door and watch for him to come.
Just wait. Soon he’ll be repeating everything you say, whether or not you can understand it/want him to. Alec took Luke to Blockbuster the other day and the woman behind the counter was thrilled when he said “Blockbuster.” I asked why he didn’t get a free rental!
And he’ll eventually learn who you are, too. Now every night at supper he turns back and forth pointing, “Daddy,” “Mommy,” “Daddy,” etc.
It’s pretty amazing watching kids go through the discovery process. Watching them pick things up, feel them and look them over is always fun. Until they put it in their mouth of course. haha
Oh my, I must have one of those magnets. Can I have one?
Also, where’s my daily post? You have spoiled me!
